Material
Options
SunBelt Construction Services Inc. works primarily with
heavy timber members to create large scale timber vehicular
bridges, timber pedestrian bridges, boardwalks, docks,
piers, and retaining walls. In our experience there are
numerous benefits to building with timber materials:
- Most Cost Savings
- Resistance to the
Elements
- Shorter Project
Lifecycle
- Minimal Environmental
Impact
In Today’s market there have been incredible advances in
material technology. There are now numerous alternative
materials provided to replace some or all the timber
materials used in bridge and boardwalk construction.
Although these materials come at a slight cost increase the
benefits they provide outweigh their initial investment.
Alternative materials can increase the lifespan of your
structure, minimize structural maintenance, provide
different aesthetic options, and eliminate harsh chemical
treatments. Below is a brief introduction to a few of the
alternative materials we work with and the benefits you can
expect when you make the decision to go alternative.
CertainTeed
CertainTeed is a composite material used for decking and
handrails. It is actually a recycled Polyvinyl Chloride
Compound (PVC) bound to wood particles to create a wooden
composite board. There are no chemicals used during the
bonding process. The final product is available in a variety
of textures and colors. CertainTeed also supplies a 25 year
product warranty.
Trelleborg Marine Systems
Trelleborg is another composite material available to
replace all timber members used in our construction
including all structural members. Trelleborg produces a
polyethylene EcoBoard that is ideal for long term immersion
in water. EcoBoard is a 100% recycled material that is
reinforced with glass fibers for added strength and
durability. Ecobaords will not rot, chip, split or splinter.
Trelleborg also supplies a 50 year product warranty.
Timbersil
Timbersil is actually a wood treatment process that replaces
older treatments. Timbersil is available for decking and
handrails. This treatment process takes standard timber
materials and infuses it with glass particles. This process
increases the overall strength of the material and creates a
100% natural product without any chemicals or heavy metals.
Timbersil also supplies a 40 year product warranty.
This is just a brief introduction to the many different
material options available to you as alternatives to timber.
As always, each project requires special attention. Each of
these different products works better in certain
applications. It is best to consult with our Project
Specialists to address the needs and concerns presented by
the construction of your structure.
